'Night' Vocabulary

While engaging with the text, students will need to know the following vocabulary to better understand the content. There will be a pre-assement to find out what the students already know along with a assessment done at the end of the unit to find out what they have learned. We will spend a day going over the vocabulary terms at the beginning of the unit.

Below is a thorough list of vocabulary words the students will engage with during the reading of the novel

1. Genocide-the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation

 

2. Death camp-a prison camp, especially one for political prisoners or prisoners of war, in which many die from poor conditions and treatment or from mass execution

 

3. Holocaust- destruction or slaughter on a mass scale, especially caused by fire or nuclear war

 

4. Synagogue- the building where a Jewish assembly or congregation meets for religious worship and instruction

 

5. Ghettos-an isolated or segregated group or area

 

6. Anti-semitism- hostility to or prejudice against Jews

 

7. Gestapo-the official secret police of Nazi Germany and German-occupied Europe

 

8. Red Army-the army and the air force of the Russian Soviet

 

9. Final Soultion-the Nazi policy of exterminating European Jews. Introduced by Heinrich Himmler and administered by Adolf Eichmann, the policy resulted in the murder of 6 million Jews in concentration camps between 1941 and 1945

 

10. Mysticism- a religion bases on a communion with an ultimate reality

 

11. Deportee- a person who is expelled from a home or community by authority

 

12. Exterminate- killing on a large scale

 

13. Liquidate- the removal of or elimation

 

14. Oppresive- weighing heavily on the senses or spirit. 

 

15. Tormenting- intense feelings of suffering
