SAT Prep

With recent state changes, it is now required that 11th grade students take the SAT standardized test. Therefore, it has become essential that students practice, as much as they are able, for this test. This class was designed to do just that. It is not a required course but it does align with many of our state standards and would help any student, college bound or not. This is a one semester class where we will be using Khan Academy as our number one resource. Khan Academy has partnered with College Board to develop amazing lessons to prepare students for the SAT. For further information, please visit collegeboard.org

In the Classroom

I begin with having the students take a practice SAT test (PT1). Though the students should have taken the PSAT in the fall, it has been many months since then. This means that their math or writing skills should have, hopefully, improved. This is to ensure that I have the most accurate assessment of each, individual student. Then, I meet with each individual student to compare past scores and discuss their personal goals for this class. Once we have done that, I work with them on grammar and writing. We go over common questions that are on the SAT and do refreshers. Then we do the same for Math and the Essay portion of the SAT. Each week is catered towards their needs. For example, today (1/26/18), I did a lesson with them on homophones because they were struggling with the grammar section of the practice quizzes. Many of them needed a more thorough explanations on commas as well. During this lesson, It was brought to my attention that they do not understand what a conjunction is. Therefore, next week we will discuss this topic. Often times, I let the students do practice quizzes, through khan academy, so that they can discover what they need to work on.

This is a new class and is being developed carefully, with a lot of assessments. If you wish to practice for the SAT, please visit College Board and create a Khan Academy account!
