Multi-Genre Projects

This is one of my all time favorite units to teach. I firmly believe that there is no such thing as "Too much writing". This unit is designed to help students explore different types of writing based off of their interests. I came up with the idea for this unit through a college class and tweaked it to better accommodate high school students.

We start this unit during the first week of school. This unit is a full semester, though we do other units at the same time. First, the students will choose one topic of their interests. It can range from personal relationships (family and friends) to hobbies (basketball, music). Then, the students will be given a list of 60 genres. Each genre will have its own expectations. Every Friday is multi-genre day, the students will chose one genre and complete it in a their google drive. By the end of the semester they should have 15 genres complete, one of which will be 1500 words. Then they will put it together and present it to the class in a unique way. In the past, I have had students create scrapbooks, build boxes, paper mache items, cut out items, and create powerpoints. It is the perfect opportunity for students to express themselves through writing.

At the end of the semester, I always hold on open house where parents and the community can come in to see these amazing projects. Lots of love and writing is put into these projects.
